Handcrafted Workshop 2017

In mid-October, a Handcrafted Workshop with the entire Steuler tile group was held in Mühlacker. For four days, seven participants from product development were able to work and experiment with a variety of materials and techniques.

The theme of “Motion/Emotion” provided a thematic anchor that left plenty of scope for individual ideas.

The cross-group teams dealt with very different design approaches such as the ancient Japanese art of shō sugi ban for finishing wood surfaces. This technique uses fire, and flowing and moving structures created by experimenting with alcoholic inks, oil colours and light and thus producing fascinating tactile stimuli and relief textures captured with plaster and clay. In another project, large-scale surfaces that combine craftsmanship and random effects were fashioned using oil and a scraper.
